Week 2 In Uganda

The next week in Uganda was not as bad as I thought it would be. We loved Uganda and getting to see new things, so at this point it still felt like a new adventure, even though we had the disappointment with court being delayed.

During this week most of our mornings would start on the front porch enjoying the cool breeze and each other's company while D played. If there is one thing I miss about Uganda, this is it. Hands down. Those moments in the morning as a family were priceless. We would then usually walk to and from the Italian Supermarket which includes a HUGE hill for groceries and good sub sandwiches. We were very fortunate that the place we stayed in had a nice big kitchen we could use. I mentioned the huge hill and it is worth mentioning again. A huge hill is one thing, a huge hill in high elevation carrying a two year old and groceries is a complete different thing. Good workout and comedy to say the least.

In the afternoons we would typically visit the American Recreation Association that had a huge playground, swimming pool, and good American food. We met several other adoptive families there and became good friends with one family who was from Austin! They invited us to a local church and lunch with them for Easter that Sunday which was great.

On Easter, when D woke up, we showed him his Easter basket the Easter bunny had brought him! We read him his book on the meaning of Easter and then headed to Watoto church in the downtown area. It was a very large church and a great celebration - D loved the music. Afterwards we had lunch with our Austin friends at Cafe Roma, a great Italian food place close to our guesthouse. We ate at Cafe Roma SO much during our stay. Every time we would each order a pizza and say we would take the leftovers for dinner, but then just eat it all...it was that good. D loved the pizza and bolognese too. We also had Mexican food at a place called Lotus Mexicana which was, surprisingly, very good - even to us Texans. After lunch and a nap, we hid Easter eggs for D on our guesthouse lawn and he had fun collecting them.

During this week we also completed the few adoption process things we could like getting his passport photos taken and getting him medically cleared for his visa.

Because we knew we would have so much free time on our hands, we also were able to book a safari trip. Truly a surreal and amazing experience. We were so blessed to be able to experience God's creation this way - more to come on that in my week 3 update.

This week D started saying prayers with us - bowing his head, folding his hands, closing his eyes, and yelling "AMEN!" at the end - is there anything more precious?

We really enjoyed this week of learning to live everyday life in Uganda and seeing our child's homeland. God continued to answer prayers, teach us patience, provide encouragement from friends and family, and give us wisdom as new parents.

  1. The Watoto Childrens Choir sings in Chris Tomlin's Hello Love CD, on the Hello Love song, I believe. Did y'all get to hear them on Easter? I'm also assuming it's the same and that there aren't a bunch of Watoto's out there.
